UK Women’s Tennis Continues Home Stretch on Tuesday Against Indiana

by Chandler Brandes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Fresh off two hard-fought victories on Sunday, the Kentucky women’s tennis team returns to the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on Tuesday, Feb. 15 for a matchup with Indiana. First serve against the Hoosiers is set for 11 a.m. ET as the Wildcats continue their eight-match home stretch.

UK enters the contest with a perfect 8-0 mark on the season for the second year in a row. The Wildcats are seeking to extend their record to 9-0, which would match the program’s best start of 9-0 in 2009.

Kentucky impressed in its last showing during a doubleheader on Feb. 13. After trailing Penn State by three early in the first match, the comeback Cats showed their resiliency by claiming four straight points to win the match, 4-3. Florencia Urrutia gave UK its first point of the day while Fiona Arrese put the team within one of the Nittany Lions.

Just as they did in the season opener, UK’s two freshmen in Ellie Eades and Lidia Gonzalez once again showed up big when it mattered most. Eades tied the match at three apiece before Gonzalez earned the second clinching point of her Wildcat career to seal the match for UK.

Carrying the momentum from their come-from-behind effort in the first match, the Wildcats completed their second 4-0 sweep of the young season against Western Kentucky on Sunday. The team handily secured the doubles point against its in-state foe with three singles wins coming from Arrese, Urrutia and Carla Girbau.

In total, Kentucky has won six out of the eight doubles points for a 13-5 doubles record, also boasting a 26-11 singles record. Urrutia paces the team with an unblemished 7-0 mark in singles action.

Indiana will arrive in Lexington with a 5-1 record on the year, most recently coming off a 4-0 victory over Bellarmine on Sunday. The two teams last squared off on Jan. 31, 2020, in Bloomington where the Wildcats posted a convincing 4-0 sweep over their Big Ten rival.

Tuesday’s match was originally slated to be a doubleheader with Bellarmine, but the contest against the Knights has been rescheduled to Friday, March 11 at 4 p.m.

Admission to all home tennis matches will be free for the 2022 season. Capacity at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center is limited and will be based on a first come, first serve basis.
