No. 3 UK Rifle Finishes Weekend Sweep of Two Top-10 Teams

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 3 University of Kentucky rifle team ended a perfect weekend at home with a victory over No. 6 Akron on Sunday. It’s the fifth consecutive win to start the 2019-20 season after defeating the Zips 4699-4663.
 
Freshman Mary Tucker finished as the top individual of the match for the second time this weekend, shooting an aggregate score of 1190. This comes two days after shooting a 1192. Those are the top two aggregate scores in the nation as of Sunday.
 
For the second match in a row, Tucker fired a 593 in smallbore. She tied herself for the No. 2 smallbore mark in the country. Sophomore Will Shaner’s 594 from Friday remains No. 1. Shaner scored 588 in smallbore, followed by sophomores Richard Clark and Ruby Gomes with 578 and 566. Freshman Mason Hamilton shot a 570. Sophomore Mitchell Nelson shot a personal best 586 in relay 2.
 
Stellar performances from Tucker, Shaner and Gomes in air rifle sealed the victory for the Wildcats, as they shot marks of 597, 595 and 594, respectively. Tucker fired off four rounds of perfect 100s while Shaner and Gomes each had three. Kentucky’s air rifle score bested Akron by 21 points. Freshman Jaden Thompson contributed a 584, and Clark shot a 583.
 
Great American Rifle Conference opponent Akron finished 36 points behind Kentucky, scoring 2314 in smallbore, 2349 in air rifle and a 4663 overall.

Kentucky concludes its fall slate on Nov. 16 against Navy at the Buell Armory. The match will begin at 9 a.m. ET.
 
This season’s GARC Championships will be in Memphis, Tennessee, on Feb. 28-29. Kentucky will play host to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Memorial Coliseum on March 13-14.
