UKTF Concludes 2018 Regular Season with Kentucky Relays

by Jake Most

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Derby day starts with relays on a blue track in Lexington as the University of Kentucky will host the annual Kentucky Relays at the UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex on Saturday, May 5.

The 2018 edition of the meet will see three Olympians – including a silver medalist from Rio and another finalist – compete; with plenty more of the top names in track and field on hand for autograph signings.

Reigning NCAA pole vault champion Olivia Gruver is slated to make her season debut. Current NCAA decathlon leader and NCAA heptathlon champion Tim Duckworth is entered in the shot put and discus.

Rio 2016 silver medalist Joe Kovacs (Penn State alumnus) is entered in the shot put, Team USA discus thrower at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 World Championships and UK Class of 2015 two-time

Southeastern Conference Champion Andrew Evans is making his discus debut, and UK Class of 2015 and 2016 Olympic 400m hurdles finalist Leah Nugent is entered in the 400m hurdles. Additionally, 2017 NCAA long jump champion and reigning U.S. bronze medalist Sha’Keela Saunders will compete in the long jump.

Logistics
The meet will begin at 9 a.m. ET with the first collegiate running event — the women’s 5,000 meters — going off at 9:20 a.m. The first collegiate field event is the men’s javelin at 10:30 a.m. ET

UK students and kids 5-years old and younger get in for free. Tickets will be sold at the gate for $8 for adults (ages 19-64), and $5 for youth and seniors (ages 6-18, 65 and older).

UK seniors will also be honored at 3:45 p.m.

The promotions
Fans can pick up UK track and field trading cards, and there will be a UKTF shoelaces giveaway in addition to autograph signings with many of the Wildcats on the 2018 UKTF posters. Some of the world’s top professional athletes who also serve as volunteer assistant coaches on the UK staff while training at UK will also be on hand to sign autographs.
