Kentucky Volleyball Supports ‘Griffin’s Game’

by Deb Moore

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky volleyball head coach Craig Skinner and the Wildcats have joined others in the volleyball community in support of Kennesaw State’s “Griffin’s Game.”

The special match is in its third year and will take place on Kennesaw State’s campus on Oct. 13 as the Owls take on USC Upstate. Kentucky hosts Kennesaw State tonight at 6 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.

Kennesaw State’s head coach is Keith Schunzel, a former UK assistant coach who spent two seasons with the Wildcats from 2011-12. The Wildcats went 50-17 and advanced to the Sweet 16 in both seasons with Schunzel on the staff. He’s now the all-time winningest coach at Kennesaw State.

“Griffin’s Game” began in 2015 when Shunzel’s son, Griffin, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March of 2015.

“‘Griffin’s Game’ is about hope, love and community,” Schunzel said. “(His wife) Bri, Griffin and I have felt so much love and support in our own fight. From very personal experience, when people give money it’s about so much more than the money, it’s their way of saying, we love you, keep fighting and we’re with you.”

Each year, the Kennesaw State volleyball team chooses a family to honor at one of its matches to raise money to help with their expenses in their fight.
