No. 5 UK Rifle Posts 4703 at NCAA Preview Match

AKRON, Ohio.  – Fifth-ranked Kentucky came through with a strong performance in its most competitive environment yet, shooting a season-best 4703 at Akron’s NCAA Preview Match on Saturday.

While multiple teams have scored better than UK’s 4703 this year, Kentucky had the best score of the match on Saturday, which included eight top-10 teams.

The match will gave teams a chance to shoot at the site of the 2016 NCAA Championships, which will take place March 9-12. 

Kentucky shot 2334 in smallbore and 2369 in air rifle.

No. 1 West Virginia shot 4697, No. 4 Murray State shot 4692 and No. 2 Alaska shot 4680. No. 7 Ohio State shot 4670, NC State scored 4647, No. 8 Memphis shot 4642 and John Jay shot 4449.

The match is a two-day meet so results are not official as other teams will shoot on Sunday.

“Our performance was okay overall, and we will have to test what we did today again tomorrow vs. Alaska at home,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Our team is working hard right now. We have to keep pressing to get to the next level where we want to be.”

Connor Davis shot the team-high in smallbore with 588. Sonya May led the way in air rifle with a 594.

May shot 585 in smallbore, and Hanna Carr shot 584. 

Cathryn Papasodora shot 593, Davis shot 592 and Carr shot 590 in air rifle. 

Kentucky will host No. 2 Alaska on Sunday at Buell Armory.
