LEXINGTON, Ky. — University of Kentucky women’s basketball coach, Bernadette Mattox and the USA Women’s Basketball Team defeated Brazil, 93-79, to advance to the 13th Annual Women’s World Championships Saturday in Germany. Mattox was selected as an assistant coach of the 1998 USA Women’s World Championship team in Feb. She and the USA team will face Russia, who defeated Australia in the semifinal, in the championship final. The winner will get an automatic bid to the 2000 Olympic Games to be held in Sydney, Australia. The game will be broadcasted on NBC at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 7.
Held every four years by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the World Championship is contested by 16 national teams. Having participated in 11 of the 12 previous World Championships, USA teams have captured the gold medal five times, including two of the last three.
