LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-ranked Kentucky rifle team ground out its second win over a ranked opponent in as many days with a 4650-4584 victory over No. 17 North Carolina State on Sunday at the Virginia Military Institute range.
Kentucky led 2294-2264 after smallbore, and bettered the Wolfpack 2356-2320 in air rifle.
With Sunday’s win, UK improved to 3-0 on the season, and began the Great American Rifle Conference portion of the schedule 1-0.
The Wildcats improved their score from Saturday in smallbore by three. Kentucky’s air rifle total on Saturday against No. 12 Navy was a point better the score UK posted on Sunday.
“Even though our scores were low this weekend I think we learned a lot about ourselves,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Moving forward I think we will have to stay focused on our tasks. It is always disappointing when your work does not pay off in the results that the team was looking for . So we will have to find ways to work harder.”
Connor Davis led the way in smallbore for the second consecutive day. He, along with NC State’s Lucas Kizeniesky scored 580.
Making her season-debut this weekend, Heather Kirby turned in a strong performance, winning air rifle with a score of 593, and finishing third overall (second amongst Wildcats) with a score of 578.
Cody Manning was UK’s third finisher (fourth overall) in smallbore with a total of 574. Sonya May and Jon Pinkel notched respective scores of 572 and 568.
UK dominated air rifle individually finishing with the top seven placers.
Davis placed second to Kirby with a score of 590. Elijah Ellis finished third (589), while Jason Sharbel and Manning finished fourth and fifth respectively – each with a score of 587.
