Jonah Mitchell Named SEC Freshman of the Week
LEXINGTON, Kentucky – Jonah Mitchell of the Kentucky cross country team has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
On Friday at the UAB Blazer Classic in Birmingham, Mitchell led the Wildcat contingent by covering the 8,000 meters with a time of 24:34.5. He finished 25th overall, the top freshman among the six SEC teams that competed at the nine-team event. He got stronger as the meet progressed at the Veterans Park course, as he was in the back of the pack early before surging to the top 25 with about 3,000m to go and holding steady from there.
This is the fourth time that a Wildcat has won a league award this season. On Sept. 19, Matt Duvall won the Commodore Classic and was named SEC Men’s Co-Runner of the Week for that performance. On Oct. 3, Duvall earned SEC Freshman of the Week laurels at the “Live at Lou” Classic. On the women’s side, Athena Young took home SEC Freshman of the Week honors at the Commodore Classic.
