LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Cross Country teams will get back into competitive mode this weekend at the 17th Annual Louisville Cross Country Classic, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park.
The meet for UK will begin with the men’s 8,000-meter race at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K race at 10:15 a.m.
Sawyer Park was the site of the 2012, 2015, and 2017 NCAA Division I National Championships, six NCAA DI Southeast Regional Championships.
The race is UK’s penultimate competition before the start of postseason races, which begin with the Southeastern Conference Championships on Oct. 26. UK will race at the Penn State National Open on Oct. 12.
UK freshman Sophie Carrier won the women’s individual 5k race, and junior Brennan Fields won the men’s 8k at UK’s last meet, the home Bluegrass Invitational on Sept. 8.
The UK women’s team took the first through fifth-place spots to come out comprehensive winners at that meet.
The UK men’s team was second overall at the Bluegrass Invitational.
Cross country refresher
Points are scored in cross country corresponding to finishing place. The place of each of the top five finishers on each team are added up and the team with the lowest total wins. Placers outside a team’s top five cannot score so finishers on other teams that might finish behind a team’s No. 6 or No. 7 finisher can get a point total fewer than their overall place in the race.
