Kentucky Concludes 2017 on High Notes, Earns 3-0 Win at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. – The Kentucky women’s soccer team finished the 2017 season with a resounding 3-0 win at Georgia on Thursday night – capping off the first year of the Ian Carry era in Lexington. The Wildcats scored two goals in the first half and added a third in the second half for the win.
 
“I am very proud of these young women tonight,” Carry said after the match. “We are disappointed in not getting to Orange Beach – but when you consider the trials and tribulations of the year – we still ended up with two more wins than a season ago. With the return of some of our injured players and an exciting 2018 class, we can’t wait to get to work with this group and return Kentucky women’s soccer back to its place competing for championships in the SEC.”
 
Senior Katy Keen scored in the sixth minute on what could possibly be UK’s best goal of the season to set the tone of the match and put the Wildcats up, 1-0. Foster Ignoffo got loose along the right end of the Georgia defense and served in a beautiful ball to the top of the box where Keen was there to hammer it home for the 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match.
 
In the 39th minute, Ignoffo doubled the Wildcats lead with a brilliant, curving, high-arching finish into the upper 90 far post past the UGA keeper from the top of the box. The ball initially came into the feet of Sophie Babo, who played the ball back on great hold-up play and Ignoffo finished it off.
 
Kentucky put the match on ice in the 71st minute as Miranda Jimemez scored off a rebound from a corner kick. Jimenez put home Payton Atkins’ initial shot, which was saved, and the Wildcats went 3-0 up, and saw the match out from there.
 
There were so many things to build off of for the Wildcats this season, including freshman sensation Miranda Jimenez, who led the Wildcats in scoring – becoming the first freshman to lead the Wildcats in scoring since Caitlin Landis did in 2010, scoring seven goals in her freshman campaign. Defensively, the Wildcats fought through backline injuries all season, and ended up with a chance at glory on the final match day.
 
UK closes the season with eight wins to its name and three Southeastern Conference wins – as the Wildcats dropped a three-way tiebreak between themselves, Mississippi State and Missouri.
 
Kentucky, Mississippi State and Missouri finished in a three-way tie on nine points

  • UK – MSU (W), MIZ (L) = 3 points
  • MSU – UK (L), MIZ (W) = 3 points
  • MIZ – UK (W), MSU (L) = 3 points
• 3B. No one team has defeated all the tied teams
• 3C. Use sub-section B of a two-team tiebreak
  • The common opponents are Georgia, South Carolina and LSU
    • Kentucky (6 points against those teams)
    • Missouri (6 points against those teams)
    • Mississippi State (4 points against those teams)
      • Mississippi State gets eliminated
  • The tiebreak then goes to the first sub-section of head-to-head since only two teams remain
    • Missouri beat Kentucky, 2-1
      • Missouri advances to the 2017 SEC Tournament
