Wildcats Fall in Heartbreaking Fashion in 3-2 defeat vs. Louisville
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats fall to 0-1-1 on the season following a heartbreaking defeat against the Louisville Cardinals (2-0-0) in the 2026 edition of the Battle in the Bluegrass at the Bell Soccer Complex on Monday night.
In front of a packed crowd, the Wildcats claimed an early lead over the Cardinals thanks to Louisville transfer Michael Lee’s first goal of the season, assisted by Costa Iliadis and Yasha Schaerer, opening the game’s scoring account against his former team in the 18th minute.
Just over 13 minutes later, Schaerer doubled the Kentucky lead in the 31st minute, coming off an assist from Lee, slotting home a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past the outstretched arms of Louisville keeper Nathaniel Abraham and into the bottom corner of the net.
Following a dominant first half, the Wildcats would take a commanding 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
10 minutes after the intermission, Louisville cut the Wildcat lead in half after a yellow card was issued to Kentucky midfielder Marcus Andersen inside the penalty area. The subsequent spot kick from Andres Escudero Martin was converted to move the scoreline to 2-1 in the 56th minute.
The Cardinals would go on to score two goals in the final seven minutes of the match, first in the 83rd minute and again in the 90th, both scored by forward Giacomo Zizza, to give the traveling side a come-from-behind 3-2 win.
Next up, the Wildcats will travel to Blacksburg, Va. on Aug. 28 for their first road test of the 2026 season in a Friday night matchup against the Virginia Tech Hokies at 6 p.m. ET.
