Three Wildcats Advance on Opening Day of NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kentucky Wildcats completed day one of the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championships today in Fayetteville, Ark. on the penultimate day of the collegiate indoor season.

The three Wildcats qualified for their respective finals during the opening day in Fayetteville, including Vanice Kerubo Nyagisera in the women’s 800m, Emmi Scales in the women’s 60m hurdles and Denzel Simusialela in the men’s 200m.

Sharmelle Holmes and Hannah Douglas kicked off the championships for Kentucky in the women’s 60m and 400m semifinals, placing 12th and 10th, respectively, with times of 7.23 and 51.81.

In the women’s 800m semifinal, Kerubo Nyagisera advanced to tomorrow’s final, placing eighth with a time of 2:03.30. The Wildcat freshman entered the championships with the nation’s 12th-best 800m time and will feature as the lone freshman in the final race.

Emmi Scales continued her historic season tonight, making her mark in the 60m hurdles semifinal and moving on to the final with a fifth-place finish and a final time of 8.04. Scales will look to earn her second postseason medal of 2026 in the women’s 60m hurdles final tomorrow night at 6:50 p.m. ET.

In the lone event for the Wildcats today on the men’s side, Simusialela qualified for the 200m final to cap off day one of the championships, finishing sixth with a time of 20.60.

Tomorrow’s events will conclude this year’s championships, beginning with the women’s high jump at 2:45 p.m. ET, followed by the men’s triple jump, and finishing with the women’s 4x400m relay, as well as the finals for each of the remaining track events.
