KENTUCKY QUOTES

Coach Kenny Brooks

Opening statement…

I am very proud of our kids. You see the way that they hung in there, not just today, but when we dug ourselves a hole and we dropped a few games that we probably thought we could have, should have won, in Teonni’s absence, but throughout the whole time, just our preparation, the attitude in the locker room, everyone was still on board, knowing what we could be. I think I made a statement, I said I didn’t like where we were, but I was excited about where we were going to go. And these kids stepped up; they locked in, and they never wavered with their preparation, with their execution. And this was a really good week for us as a whole, but that was a particularly good outing for us today. So, I am very proud of these two. A lot of people made tremendous contributions, and that’s how we got the win as a team today.

On Hassett and Boone’s being difference maker…

Yeah, exactly that. You know, both of them do a tremendous job of stretching the floor. We become a lot different. And you know what, shout out to everyone with their adjustments and the starting lineups that we made. If you ask Asia Boone, she would prefer coming off the bench. We inserted her back into the starting lineup and it’s given us two games where we have gotten off to really good starts. Amelia stretches the floor and I’ll give kudos to George Obi with her positive energy when she comes in off the bench. Everybody is very receptive to it, but when those two are making shots, we’re a pretty tough team to guard because it opens up things for her, and it opens up the lane for Tonie. They’re a big difference in how we play.

#5, Tonie Morgan

On Asia’s development…

“She just gets more confident every game. I mean she is smaller, but you can’t tell because she just shoots her shot. She’s just been so happy lately, but I’m going to keep feeding her. We’re going to keep finding her, and she’s going to keep knocking them down.”

On preparing for big games…

“Every day matters. We can’t take any day off. We have to show up to practice every day or we’ll end up in a hole.”

#13, Clara Strack

On the ball fake play…

“I mean, she blocked my shot a few times, and coach told I should just ball fake and go to the basket. So, I went to the basket.”

On her mindset playing physical players…

“Yeah, I mean, I think going into it like, you know, every team in SEC is physical. I don’t think there’s a team that’s not, so I think you just have to battle like that with like, my strengths. I’m obviously not as strong as other people, but I have length so I can get around people, things like that. But I think, like, you said, like, I know every game is going to be physical, so I think you can’t go into it expecting it not to be.”

On playing aggressive team leads to frustration…

“I mean, I think frustration just kind of makes you better. It makes you better, it makes you more aggressive, it makes you faster, things like that. So, use it to your advantage.”

On the energy in SEC games…

“I mean, energy is something that we talked about from day one, I think in our games that we did drop a few, that was one of our biggest issues. We’re not bringing the energy throughout the whole game, and so I think that’s something that helped us get out, like to start today, is how much energy we’ve been bringing in practices and how much we’re carrying it over and out to our games, just celebrating each other and being there for each other is really what kind of builds the energy. And then I think the crowd feeds off that, and then we feed off the crowd back. So, I think that’s been really helpful for us.”
