Kentucky Quotes

Head Coach Kenny Brooks

Opening Statement…
“Thank you guys for coming out, pleased, for the most part, with our performance today. Obviously, when they leave you for a long, extended period of time, then you come back and you got a couple days to prepare for a game you never know what to expect. And then obviously, being down one person, you would have to mix and match your rotations, but I was very pleased for the most part. I thought we shot the ball particularly well during stretches, and I thought Clara was tremendous. I don’t know the offensive end, but what she did on the defensive end and leadership quality. So very pleased with the effort, looking forward to next week.”

On having so many assists today…
“It says that, you know, we are the ball doesn’t stick. We move the basketball. We have, we have initiators, facilitators and kids who can finish, you know, some stuff. So we got there pretty early, and we didn’t play well the last five minutes. Give them credit, but it does show you that we’re an unselfish basketball team, and we played the game the right way. It’s not just trying to play one on one. That’s a fun style to watch. Fun style to coach, and these kids are excited.”

On preparing for SEC play…
“There are times where I remember, in particular the second quarter, somebody got beat, and I thought it was the end of the world, and I was a little disappointed with that possession, and then I got the box score, and they had scored six points in the whole quarter, you know? So it’s like, you know, sometimes you get a dose of reality, but you’re coaching in the moment. And what we’re trying to do, and no offense to Hofstra, but we’re trying, we’re not trying to just be better than Hofstra, you know, we know that they’re going to be opportunities, that we’re going to be playing much better basketball teams that we’ve got to hone in and execute the right way. But, you know, we do a good job, we’re long. We do a good job of playing to our strengths. Asia, in particular, her and Tonie have gotten so much better since the beginning of the season on the defense, on the ball, on ball defense, and they played in a way that they know that they have help on the backside, you know. So that’s part of the understanding of who you are as a basketball team. So I think we have a chance to be really good on the defensive end. I think the statistics show that, but we played our strength, and you get Clara back there, Clara seven blocks tonight, it just really helps in that situation. So, I like the direction we’re going in. You know, you always want to be better, and we think we can be better. We’re going to have to be better to be in the upper echelon of the SEC.”

#8, Asia Boone

On how she gains confidence and stays aggressive….
“What I focus on before games is control what I can control, and that’s defense, trying to get boards, and just doing my job. When my defense is good, it translates to good offense, so just building that confidence. Also, getting energy from the girls, that builds my confidence and encourages me to keep shooting. Coach was telling me to keep staying aggressive and also playing as who I am.”

On Tonie running the point….
“The second that he put me in at the point guard, throughout the weeks and just working, Tonie and I have gotten really close. Needing to be with each other on where we’re supposed to be, whether that’s in certain plays and just figuring each other out. Communicating, and getting each other in the spots for our teammates too, because not only are we facilitating, but we have to know everything and I have to know two positions. It’s been great working with Tonie, working with the girls. It’s been a relief and really a great experience to continue with it and get the chemistry going. Not only are we stacking days, but we’re working together to get these wins, preparing each other and the team for SEC, and we’ve got a lot of passion and heart for the game.”
