Kentucky is coming off a triumph over Morehead State, 75-59, in the season opener in Historic Memorial Coliseum on Monday.
Four players scored in double digits, including three players with a least 15 points from point guard Tonie Morgan (16), center Clara Strack (15) and guard Jordan Obi (15). It marked the first time the program had three players score at least 15 points each in a season opener since doing so against Presbyterian on Nov. 9, 2021 (Rhyne Howard, Dre’una Edwards, Treasure Hunt).
Strack and Obi also added 15 rebounds, becoming the first pair of UK teammates with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds each in the same game since at Texas A&M on Feb. 28, 2016 (Evelyn Akhator, Alexis Jennings).
Strack, an All-Southeastern Conference preseason selection and National Player of the Year Watch List candidate, stuffed the stats, also adding three blocks, three steals and two assists to go along with her 15 points and 15 rebounds.
The Wildcats, who got behind early in the game before they went on a 21-4 run to close out the first quarter, 25-17, and they led ever since.
UK improved to 10-0 under head coach Kenny Brooks all-time when the opponent scored fewer than 60 points. UK held MSU to 35.7 field-goal percentage. Since the start of the Brooks’ era, UK has held 23 of its last 32 opponents to under 40.0 percent shooting from the field.
Kentucky collected 12 blocks against Morehead State, including a team-high four from forward Teonni Key. Since the start of the Brooks’ era, Kentucky now has five games with at least 12 blocks. Prior to last season, Kentucky had three such games in program history.
Thursday night’s game will mark the first meeting between the two teams in program history.
