UKXC Sweeps Wildcat Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s women’s and men’s cross country teams both defeated Cincinnati to open the 2016 season on Thursday at Masterson Station Park.

Katy Kunc won the women’s race 4,000-meter race in 14:12.00, and Kendall Muhammad won the men’s 4k  in 11:45.51.

The Kentucky women’s team won 15-50. 

Kentucky had the top 11 finishers in the women’s race with Amy Hansen (14:35.92), Jill Weston (14:36.99), Caroline McCaslin (14:40.68) and Avery Bussjager (14:47.89) earning Kentucky’s scoring finishes.

The Kentucky men’s team defeated Cincinnati 19-41.

Daniel Southard placed third overall, and as UK’s No. 2 scorer, in 11:59.20.. Brennan Fields crossed the line behind Southard in 12:00.24, Mick Iacofano was fifth overall in 12:01.10, and Ben Young was UK’s No. 5 finisher in 12:04.05.

Cross country meet team scores are calculated by adding up the values of top-five placers finishes, with the low score winning.

Kentucky’s next meet will be the Bluegrass Invitational on Sept. 10 at Masterson Station Park.

The Kentucky men’s team was picked to finish fourth, and the women’s team was projected to be 10th at the 2016 SEC Championships by league coaches. 
The Kentucky women’s team is ranked No. 7 in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region to begin the season. The Kentucky men’s team is ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region.
