LEXINGTON, Kty. (AP) – Marvin Stone had 10 points and seven rebounds asKentucky struggled to beat Division II Alaska-Anchorage 62-42 Monday night.
Tayshaun Prince and Jamaal Magloire also had 10 each for the Wildcats, whoshot only 37 percent from the field and 5.8 percent from 3-point range.
Leading 27-18 at halftime, Kentucky (7-4) opened the second half with a 16-4run but never could completely distance themselves from the Seawolves (5-3).
Scott Larabee led Alaska-Anchorage with a game-high 14 points.
Kentucky, coming off impressive back-to-back victories over bitterintrastate rival Louisville and fifth-ranked Michigan State, overcame a tepidstart to beat Alaska-Anchorage for the fifth time in as many career meetings.
The Wildcats made their first three shots of the game then made only two oftheir next 18 over the next 11 minutes as Alaska-Anchorage took a 16-13 leadwith 6:30 to play in the half.
Saul Smith then scored seven consecutive points during an 11-0 run asKentucky regained the lead, 24-16. The Wildcats led at halftime despite makingonly 10-of-31 shots and being outrebounded 23-19.
Prince opened the second half with a steal and dunk and Magloire added sixconsecutive points as Kentucky increased its lead to 46-25 with 11 minutesremaining.
But that 21-point margin was the Wildcats’ largest of the game as theSeawolves took advantage of Kentucky’s shooting woes to keep from being blownout.
The Wildcats made only 25-of-67 field goals in the game, including 1-of-173-pointers, turned the ball over 14 times and were outrebounded 46-44 by themuch smaller Seawolves.
Alaska-Anchorage, whose leading scorer missed the game because of a brokenjaw, made only 15-of-59 field goals (25 percent) and turned the ball over 25times, resulting in 34 Kentucky points.
