Powers Wins Gold on Day Two of SEC Indoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It was a golden day for the Wildcats at the track on Friday at the R.A. Murray Fasken Indoor Facility, as UK captured its first medal of this week’s SEC Indoor Championships in College, Station, Texas.

Yesterday, junior Carli Makarawu continued his historic season today by setting yet another school record in the 200m prelims, breaking the same record he broke just two weeks ago in Clemson at the Tiger Paw Invite. His 20.20 time also broke the SEC Indoor meet record, as well as the venue record for the Fasken Indoor Facility. Makarawu will compete for gold tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. CST in the 200m final.

Today, sophomore Kate Powers struck gold for the first time in her young career with a 22.13m final mark in the women’s weight throw final event, beating out Ole Miss’s Skylar Soli by and Auburn’s Adrienne Adams for the gold medal. Today’s feat marks the first collegiate medal for Powers, who currently holds the all-time program record for women’s weight throw, in just her second season in Lexington.

During the evening events, five Wildcats qualified for the final in their respective competitions, including Collins Kiprop Kipngok (Men’s Mile), Sharmelle Holmes (women’s 60m), Jenna Schwinghamer and Janet Jepkemboi Amimo (women’s 800m) and Alexis Glasco (women’s 60m hurdles). Those final events will begin tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. CST and conclude at 5:22 p.m. CST.

Tomorrow’s events for the Cats begin at 2:30 p.m. CST with Grayson Brashear competing in the men’s shot put final, and later with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay final at 6:45 and 7:05 p.m. CST, respectively.
