Makarawu Runs a Meet Record in 200m Prelims on Opening Day of SEC Indoor Championships
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In the start of postseason competition, Kentucky’s track and field teams completed the opening day of the SEC Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas with 24 athletes competing in 14 different events, setting nine more personal records.
At the top of the day, sophomore Julia Gunnell picked up personal best finishes in four of the five pentathlon events, including a fifth-place finish in the shot put and a fourth-place spot in the 800m. She later finished ninth in the overall women’s pentathlon standings with 3,908 total points, marking her new personal best, and placing her 10th on the UK all-time list.
Junior Carli Makarawu continued his historic season today by setting yet another school record in the 200m prelims, breaking the same record he broke just two weeks ago in Clemson at the Tiger Paw Invite. His 20.20 time also broke the SEC Indoor meet record, as well as the venue record for the Fasken Indoor Facility. Makarawu will compete for gold on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CST in the 200m final.
To close out day one, the Wildcats took home seventh and sixth, respectively, in the men’s and women’s DMR events, with the men’s team, featuring Patrick Faust, Alex Justus, Caden Miracle and Brandon Nyandoro, recording a season best time of 9:37.91.
Tomorrow’s events begin at 11 a.m. CST with Logan Coles, Daroyce Flemons and Grayson Brashear competing for the Cats in the men’s weight throw final, concluding with the women’s 60m hurdles prelims, featuring Alexis Glasco, Emmi Scales, Kori Martin and Camden Bentley, at 7:02 p.m. CST.
