Kate Powers Sets New School Record, NCAA Lead in Weight Throw

LUBBOCK, Texas and NASHVILLE – Two record breakers from one week ago continued their historic success this weekend, as Kate Powers set a new school record in the weight throw—topping the mark she set last week—and Sharmelle Holmes lowered the freshman record she set a week ago.

Powers threw the twenty-pound weight 22.63m/74-3.00, adding over three feet to her record-breaking performance from the Rod McCravy Memorial. Powers finished in fourth place in the Weight Throw Invite at the Vanderbilt Invite, but she was the top collegian and threw a new NCAA leading mark, based on distances entering the day.

Also at the Vanderbilt Invite, Janet Jepkemboi Amimo made her collegiate debut in thunderous fashion, winning the 1000m in 2:43.23, the third fastest time in school history. Jenna Schwinghamer—the Kentucky record holder in the event—finished third in 2:44.45. In the Men’s 1000m, Alex Justus finished in second place in 2:22.89, No. 3 All-Time at Kentucky.

At the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Texas, freshman phenom Sharmelle Holmes continued to impress, as she set her third personal best time in the 60m in three collegiate meets. Holmes ran the dash in 7.24 seconds in the semifinal round, lowering the freshman record that she set last weekend. Her 7.29 performance at the McCravy topped a five-year-old record held by Abby Steiner. In the final, Holmes would run 7.25 seconds to finish in second place. She is now tied for sixth all-time at Kentucky after only three competitions in her career.

On the men’s side, Carlie Makarawu ran a personal best time of 6.60 seconds in the 60m semifinal to tie the fourth-fastest time in school history.

In the Women’s 60m hurdles, freshman Kori Martin ran a huge personal best time of 8.25 seconds in the preliminary round to enter a storied UK All-Time top ten in the event.

In the Women’s Pole Vault, senior Payton Phillips continued her strong start to the season with her third consecutive second-place finish, clearing 4.21m. Graduate student Shane Racey set a new season best with a clearance of 5.21m in the Men’s Pole Vault, good enough for fifth.

The Wildcats will return to the track tomorrow morning, with distance runners and throwers continuing their stay at the Vanderbilt Invite while sprinters and jumpers take on a stacked field at the Corky Classic.
