No. 7 Kentucky Completes Doubleheader Sweep on Opening Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The seventh-ranked Kentucky men’s tennis team kicked off its 2025 campaign at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Wednesday, defeating Northern Kentucky and Xavier by identical 7-0 scorelines. The Wildcats dominated the courts, winning every set of every match. Charlelie Cosnet, Matt Rankin, and Martin Breysach each recorded four match wins across singles and doubles on the day.

Wednesday’s action commenced with the match against Northern Kentucky, where the Cats picked up their first doubles point of the season in dominant action. The teams played all three courts out, with the Wildcats winning each match. Breysach and Eric Crivei, making their Wildcat dual debuts, earned the first win of 2025 with a 6-2 victory on court three. Rankin and Eli Stephenson clinched the first point of the season with a 6-1 win on court two.

In singles play, the Wildcats raced out to the lead, winning all four first sets of the opening flight. Rankin was the first Wildcat to earn a singles win, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four. Stephenson and Loutit quickly followed to deliver the clinch with wins on courts three and two, respectively. The two teams elected to play out the match, allowing No. 79 Cosnet to earn his first career win at the No. 1 singles position. Breysach and Crivei played their matches to a singular pro-set, with both dominating their courts to seal the 7-0 win over the Norse.

After the intermission, the Wildcats returned to the court without missing a beat, continuing their opening day domination. With all three doubles courts at identical 5-1 scorelines, Breysach and Weekes took the first victory with a 6-1 win on court one. Moments later, Cosnet and Rankin followed suit and gave their team a 1-0 advantage in the dual with a win on court two.

Kentucky would continue its singles success, led by Stephenson’s perfect performance on court four. The sophomore from Louisville earned a 6-0, 6-0 win to close his opening day with an astounding 24 games won out of 25 over two singles matches. No. 39 Weekes, the Wildcat’s highest ranked singles player entering the spring, picked up his first win of the year on court one with a clinical 6-2, 6-1 win over All-Big East performer Ryan Cahill.

No. 79 Cosnet delivered the clinching point for the Cats, taking court three by a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. The two teams played out the match, allowing Loutit, Breysach, and Rankin to each pick up their second singles wins of the day.

The Wildcats will make a quick turnaround and return to the court on Friday, heading to East Lansing, Mich. for the first road match of the young season. The Wildcats’ dual with No. 23 Michigan State will be the first ranked match of the season for both team and will begin at 5 p.m. ET from the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
