Clara Silva Named SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball freshman center Clara Silva has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the first week of the conference honors, it was announced by the league office Tuesday.
The Wildcat, a 6-7 center from Portugal, combined for 32 points on 75.0 percent shooting (15-of-20) from the field through the first two games of her college career. She also added a total of 11 rebounds, 11 blocks and four assists.
Her performances helped Kentucky defeat USC Upstate, 98-43, in the season opener on Nov. 4 and Northern Kentucky, 70-41, on Nov. 7.
In her college debut against the Spartans, she went 6-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for 14 points, adding seven rebounds, six blocks and two assists. She became the first player since Makayla Epps in 2014 to go perfect from the field (with at least five FGM). She also was one block shy of the single-game individual and freshman school records.
In her next game against Norse, she led all scorers with 18 points. She added four rebounds, all offensive, a season-high-tying two assists and five more blocks.
Silva is currently tied with one other player as the nation’s leader in blocks per game (5.5) and she is tied with two other players for second in the nation in total blocks (11).
No. 20/22 Kentucky will play host to Wofford tonight at 6 p.m. ET in Historic Memorial Coliseum. Following tonight’s matchup, UK will host in-state rival No. 18/17 Louisville on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET in Historic Memorial Coliseum. Single-game tickets are on sale for both matchups here.
