Men’s Soccer Prepares for Sun Belt Semifinals on Wednesday
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four-seeded Kentucky men’s soccer (6-5-6, 5-2-3 Sun Belt) will continue its Sun Belt Conference Tournament run on Wednesday against one-seeded and No. 10-ranked West Virginia (11-1-6, 5-0-4 Sun Belt) for a 7 p.m. EST matchup at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
Kentucky enters the contest following a 1-0 advancing win in the quarterfinal match against five-seeded South Carolina. Goalkeeper Casper Mols denied a Gamecock penalty kick attempt in the 20’ to keep USC scoreless. Senior forward Logan Dorsey was the game-winning goal scorer with a successful penalty kick in the 65’. The score was his 13th of the season and fifth game-winning goal.
West Virginia moved past the quarterfinal round defeating eight-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, following a two-goal deficit in the first half of regulation. Sergio Ors Navarro, Carlos Hernando and Marcus Caldeira recorded the Mountaineers’ three goals to advance to Wednesday’s match.
Kentucky and West Virginia hold an all-time series record of 3-0-2 (UK) with the first face-off between the programs taking place in 2001. UK and WVU went head-to-head in the regular season resulting in a scoreless draw in Morgantown.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the tournament are hosted by one-seeded West Virginia and two-seeded Marshall before determining the host of the championship match. For the full tournament bracket, click here.
