Men’s Soccer Closes Regular Season with Seven Goals at Georgia State
ATLANTA, Ga. – Kentucky men’s soccer (5-5-6, 4-2-3 Sun Belt) capped off the regular season schedule with a 7-4 victory at Georgia State (4-8-5, 1-5-3 Sun Belt) on Tuesday evening.
Senior Logan Dorsey recorded his second hat trick of the season as Martin Soereide, Oliver Stavdal, Iker Carew and Agustin Lopez recorded the remaining four goals for the Wildcats.
Dorsey became the first player in program history to record two hat tricks in a season and in a career while the Wildcats scored seven goals in a match for the first time since UK defeated Wright State 7-1 in 2019. Kentucky has scored seven goals in four matches in program history. Additionally, Dorsey becomes the first player to score in four consecutive matches since Kahlil ElMedkhar in 2019.
Georgia State was the first to get a point on the scoreboard as Tom Williams found an opportunity from his right foot in the 17th minute. However, Soereide equalized the contest four minutes later with a right-footed goal to the bottom left of the net. He was assisted by Dorsey and freshman Bertil Alban.
With the match tied 1-1, Dorsey found his first score of the night in the 26’ with an assist from Lopez to put Kentucky up 2-1. Five minutes went by on the clock before Kentucky found its third goal of the half. Stavdal recorded the third goal of his freshman season with an assist from Josh Gordon who leads the team in assists with six total. With a 3-1 advantage, Kentucky entered the halftime rest period.
Shortly into the second 45’ of regulation, Dorsey notched a brace to put Kentucky up 4-1. The right-footed shot made it past the GSU keeper, Josh Hangi, to the bottom right of the goal. He was assisted once again by Lopez and fellow senior Nick Zielonka.
As 20 minutes of play expired, Dorsey was assisted by Zielonka recording his second hat trick of the season and of his college career. With 12 goals in his senior season, he leads the team in goals scored. The Evergreen, Co. native is tied with West Virginia’s Sergio Ors Navarro leading the Sun Belt Conference with 12 goals on the regular season.
The goal notched the score up to 5-1 before Georgia State scored back-to-back goals in the 73rd and 84th minutes. With the updated score reading 5-3, the Panthers began to close the gap of the match. However, Carew broke away in the 86’ for the sixth goal of the night which was scored to the bottom left of the net unassisted.
Georgia State answered two minutes later as Bryan Silva scored the fourth Panther goal in the 88’. Lopez went for the touchdown and extra point scoring the seventh Wildcat goal of the night in the last minute of the match with an assist by the hometown kid, Bains Smith. As time expired, Kentucky came out on top 7-4 to close out the regular season schedule.
Goalkeeper Casper Mols recorded the third win of his junior season for a 2024 record of 3-3-3.
Kentucky and Georgia State now hold an updated all-time series record of 3-0-1 (UK) with the first matchup taking place in 2013.
The Wildcats will now set their sights on the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Nov. 10-17.
