Women’s Soccer Hosts Detroit Mercy Thursday
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s soccer (2-0-0) looks to remain undefeated to start the season as they host Detroit Mercy (0-2-0) at “The Bell” Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats won their first two matches 2-0 against Central Michigan and Morehead State.
Sunday’s battle with Morehead State was a tight one that saw both sides commit numerous fouls with four yellow cards issued: three to Morehead and one to Kentucky. The Eagles committed 12 fouls to the Wildcats eight throughout the game. Despite the aggressive nature of things on the pitch, the fight in the first half leaned in Kentucky’s favor as the Wildcats poured 13 shots on Morehead State goalkeeper Claire Cress. The Eagles did not generate a shot in the first half at all and were outshot by Kentucky 25-2.
Freshman Abigail Stager scored her first career goal in the match while transfer Makala Woods put the game away with her first goal for the Wildcats in the 2-0 victory over the Eagles. Kentucky has gone two games now without conceding tying the 2010 start of two games without an opponent scoring a goal. If the Wildcats can keep Detroit Mercy off the scoresheet on Thursday, it will mark the first time in program history the Wildcats start a season without conceding a goal through three games.
Detroit Mercy makes their first trip to Lexington since October 3rd, 1997, where they lost 4-0. The Titans enter the match after losing 5-2 to Utah Valley on Sunday in their home opener. The first half was a bit of a wild one as the Titans opened the scoring in the third minute of play before the Wolverines tied things up in the fifth minute. Detroit put away a penalty in the 41st minute to retake the lead and lead at the half 2-1. Utah Valley stormed back in the second half however, scoring four unanswered goals to win 5-2.
Thursday’s game will be the annual Bark at the Bell where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the complex. Dogs will be permitted through the berm side gate and all dogs must be kept on a leash while inside the complex.
A maximum of (1) dog per person is permitted. Dogs must stay on the grass berm and are not permitted in the seating bowl at any time (this includes using the restrooms, concessions, or bookstore). Owners are permitted to bring a water bowl for their dog, but dog food is prohibited. Kentucky Athletics reserves the right to refuse entry to any dog or require a dog to exit the stadium.
Bring your dog to Bark at the Park if he/she:
- Does well on-leash and is not aggressive toward people or other dogs
- Is friendly toward humans and not excessively fearful
- Is on a leash and supervised by an adult at all times
Participants are expected to practice responsible pet ownership. If your dog is an aggressive breed or has aggressive tendencies, do not bring him/her to this event. Do not bring your dog if it is unpredictable in crowds, with other dogs, and/or with strangers. Kentucky Athletics reserves the right to refuse entry to any dog or require a dog to leave for any reason.
