Stefanik, Yates Pick Up Main Draw Wins in SEC Coaches Classic
TUSCALOOSA,
Ala. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team earned five singles victories and
three doubles draw wins on the second day of play at the SEC Coaches Classic on
the campus of the University of Alabama on Saturday.
Junior
Jake Stefanik coasted his way in to the finals when he defeated Vanderbilt’s
Alex Ross, 6-0, 6-2 in the John Stimpson Main Draw semifinals. Stefanik will
take on Julian Saborio of LSU on Sunday at 9 a.m. In the consolation bracket of
the John Stimpson draw, junior Gus Benson earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Austin
Rables of Arkansas. Benson will face Ritchie Kruunenberg of Alabama on Sunday
at 9 a.m.
In the
Jeff Robinson draw, junior Trey Yates earned two wins to punch his ticket to
the finals. Yates took down Spencer Richey of Alabama, 7-5, 1-1 (Ret.) and
Florida’s McClain Kessler, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. Yates will take on Mazen
Osama of Alabama in the finals on Sunday at 9 a.m. In the consolation bracket
of the Jeff Robinson draw, freshman Alex Dominguez earned a hard-fought 1-6,
7-6(5), 7-6(2) win over Thomas Mayronne of South Carolina. Dominguez fell in
his next match to Alexey Nesterov of Alabama 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(4).
In doubles play, the duo of Benson/Stefanik picked up two
wins in the consolation bracket of the Ellis Ferreira draw. The pair defeated Binet/Virtunen of Vanderbilt,
8-6, and Marino/Sanjurjo of Arkansas, 8-6 to win the consolation bracket.
Dominguez/Yates picked up one win, 8-7(3) over South Carolina’s
Mayronne/Schafer before falling in the finals of the draw to Butsch/Moreno of
LSU, 8-5.
