Nine UKTF Wildcats Advance After Day One of U.S. Olympic Trials
EUGENE, Ore. – The Kentucky track and field program opened the 2024 United States Olympic Team Trials today at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon with nine Wildcats advancing to their respective event semifinals or finals.
Alumnus Ethan Shalaway (Class of 2018) became the first Wildcat to punch a ticket to an event final at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials after earning a 10-place finish in the men’s javelin throw with a mark of 231’1”/70.44 meters. He will throw for a chance to make Team USA on Sunday.
On the track, Kennedy Lightner and alumnus Brain Faust (Class of 2023) advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 400 meters. Lightner finished eighth after setting a personal best of 45.17 in the first round.
In the women’s 400 meters, alumna Alexis Holmes (Class of 2022) breezed her way into the semifinals finishing sixth with a time of 51.05 for the automatic qualifier. Senior Jania Martin earned a qualification on time for the semifinal after placing 24th.
All three alumnae in Celera Barnes (Class of 2021), Abby Steiner (Class of 2022), and Javianne Oliver (Class of 2017) earned automatic qualifiers for tomorrow’s 100 meter semifinal finishing 10th, 17th, and 18th respectively. Barnes crossed the line in 11.06 (+0.4) to rank within the top 10 while Steiner ran a time of 11.13 (+0.4) and Oliver a 11.15 (+0.9).
Senior Keaton Daniel concluded the night with the final qualification of the day, clearing 18’8.25”/5.70 meters to advance to Sunday’s pole vault final.
Day two of the USATF Olympic Team Trials starts at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow night with senior Charity Hufnagel in the high jump.
