Men’s 4x100 Sets School Record; UKTF Earns Four Qualifiers on Day Three of NCAA East First Rounds

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Track and Field men’s program concluded their NCAA Division I East First Rounds at the Outdoor Track and Field Facility today earning four additional qualifiers to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. In total, the men’s side will send seven student-athletes to the Beaver State.

One of the most electrifying moments of the day came in the first running event. The 4×100 meter relay team of freshman Shavique Bascus, junior Clinton Muunga, freshman Miles Jones, and graduate student Kennedy Lightner improved their school record to 38.53 for the win and punched their ticket to Eugene.

It marks the second time this season the team has set the school record in this event with the first coming at the Drake Relays last month when they broke the time of 38.81 set in 1995. It also marks the fastest Division I time in the country at both the East and West First Rounds.

Junior Luke Brown punched his first ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump launching for 53’0.25”/16.16 meters for a fourth-place finish.  Meanwhile, Lightner qualified for his third-straight outdoor championships placing sixth in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 20.14 that keeps him second on the UK all-time performers list.

Lastly, after being delayed for a day, junior Payton Phillips punched her ticket to the outdoor championships for the first time in her career. She vaulted a personal best of 14’1.25”/4.30 meters tying for the win. The mark continues to rank her second on the UK all-time performers list.

The UKTF women will conclude the NCAA East First Rounds tomorrow.
