Kate Powers Advances to Eugene on Day Two of NCAA East First Rounds
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kate Powers punched her ticket to her first NCAA Outdoor Championships as the Kentucky Track and Field women’s program opened day one of their NCAA Division I East First Rounds at the Outdoor Track and Field Facility today. The program saw Powers secure her seat to Oregon while also qualifying five runners for Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Despite a lengthy delay to the hammer throw this morning and an extended wait until the final heat, freshman Kate Powers delivered when it mattered most earning her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Massachusetts native threw a mark of 209’10”/63.97 meters on her first try, just under her freshman record, to finish fifth overall.
The Wildcats had a great day on the track advancing five out of seven runners to Saturday’s quarterfinals. All five runners earned automatic qualifiers in their respective events.
Junior Alexis Glasco earned the first automatic qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles winning the first heat of the day with a 13.00 to finish ninth overall. The time moves her to sixth overall on the UK all-time performers list.
Junior Victoria Perrow earned the big ‘Q’ in the 100-meter dash after crossing the line with a season-best time of 11.35. She advanced despite finishing 16th in the first round.
Both senior Jania Martin and freshman Oneika McAnnuff advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400 meters. Martin completed her heat in 52.61 to advance while McAnnuff crossed the line in 52.63.
Senior Sydney Steely closed out the night for the Wildcats earning an automatic qualifier in the 800 meters. The school record holder crossed the line in 2:04.38 for a 14th overall finish.
