UKTF Earns Two Gold Medals on Final Day of SEC Outdoor Championships
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Senior Keaton Daniel and junior Luke Brown earned two gold medals for the Wildcats as the University of Kentucky track and field program wrapped up the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
Daniel vaulted his way to another outdoor title giving him his fourth straight SEC gold medal, sixth SEC gold overall, and second straight this season after winning the SEC indoor pole vault title earlier this year. The Nevada native entered the competition at 17’6.50”/5.35m clearing his first three heights at ease before entering into a battle for gold with Georgia’s Nikolai Van Huyssteen, which he ultimately won by clearing 18’0.50”/5.50 meters for the championship.
Brown earned his first SEC outdoor gold medal in the triple jump fending off Florida’s Sean Dixon-Bodie for the victory. The SEC indoor triple jump champion leaped for 53’9.75”/16.40 meters on his fourth attempt for the win despite faulting on his first two attempts.
In addition to the two gold medals, Sydney Steely set a new school record in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:02.19 finishing fourth and earning five points.
UKTF finished the SEC Outdoor Championships with five total medals, two golds, two silvers and one bronze. The women finished the championships in 11th with a total of 36 points while the men also finished 11th with 35 points. UKTF returns home to host the NCAA East First Rounds on May 22-25.
