Women’s Tennis Ends SEC Tournament Run in Second Round

12-seeded Kentucky fell to five-seeded Auburn in Thursday matchup

ATHENS, Ga. – 12-seeded Kentucky women’s tennis (9-15, 3-12 SEC) ended its Southeastern Conference Tournament run in the second round with a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Auburn (16-9, 10-4 SEC) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. on Thursday evening.

Kentucky advanced out of the first round on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over No. 13 Mississippi State. The Tigers received a first-round bye to begin the conference competition. This is the fifth consecutive year UK has advanced to the second round of the conference contest with the exception of the tournament’s cancellation in 2020.

Beginning the afternoon with doubles play, Auburn claimed the point to have a 1-0 advantage. Elizabeth Stevens and Makayla Mills were the first to complete their doubles contest, falling 3-6 to DJ Bennett and Ariana Arseneault on Court 1. Zoe Hammond and Ellie Eades equalized doubles play with a big win on Court 2. They came out on top, 6-3, over Auburn’s Adeline Flach and Angella Okutoyi. However, it was Auburn’s win on Court 3 that clinched the point for the Tigers as Carolyn Ansari and Selin Ovunc defeated Julia Zhu and Maialen Morante, 6-2.

In singles play, Court 1 was the first to complete as Hammond was defeated by Auburn’s Ansari in two sets, 2-6, 2-6. The Tigers claimed another singles point on Court 3 as Stevens fell to Bennett, 3-6, 4-6. Auburn clinched the match on Court 3 as Eades was overcome by Arseneault, 6-3, 6-4.
