Kentucky Falls to Texas A&M on Sunday
Ajae Petty scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds but the Kentucky women’s basketball team lost to Texas A&M 61-44 on Sunday at Rupp Arena.
Kentucky (9-15, 2-8 Southeastern Conference) got 10 points from Maddie Scherr and seven from Eniya Russell.
Texas A&M scored first but Kentucky answered with a Scherr three, giving UK an early 3-2 lead. After A&M took a 5-3 lead, the Cats tied the game at 5-5 on a Brooklynn Miles layup. However, the Aggies then ran off 10 points in a row, only to see Kentucky answer by scoring seven straight to get within three, 15-12. However, the Aggies would lead 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, both teams struggled shooting from the field. Kentucky made just one of its first seven shots, while A&M made just one of its first nine. The Aggies would lead 22-17 before the Cats scored seven in a row to take a 24-22 lead with 1:39 left in the half. Texas A&M would get the last basket of the half and the game was tied 24-24 at the break.
A&M scored the first four points of the third quarter before Petty converted a layup and free throw to make it 28-27 Aggies. After the Aggies went up 30-27, UK got a bucket from Emma King and a three from Cassidy Rowe to grab a 32-30 lead. The Aggies would respond by scoring the next 15 points and would lead 47-34 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Kentucky was able to get within 11 points but could get no closer.
Kentucky returns to action on Thursday, visiting Auburn for an SEC matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
