BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Mallory Blackwelder was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year announced by the Southeastern Conference office Thursday.

“Obviously, I am elated by Mallory’s selection as the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “As a parent, I feel that this honor is a recognition of the balance, excellence and attention to detail that she brings to life. She has worked very hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA and has played a substantial role as captain on our team.

“Her day-to-day input has left a positive mark on our team culture that will carry on through her teammates as we continue to build our program. Her leadership, unselfishness and hard work demonstrate a total commitment in the classroom, on the golf course and behind the scenes developing a team culture of success.”

Blackwelder joins former UK athlete Beth Felts in the record books as the only two program golfers to receive this prestigious honor. Felts earned the title in 2007 for her dedication to her team and commitment to a dual-major in pre-physical therapy and business management.

The senior marketing major has also earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll twice and is a three-time member of the NGCA All-Scholar Team.

Blackwelder received this award based on her performance on and off the golf course. The Versailles, Ky., native is one of two Wildcats to participate in every tournament this season. Blackwelder led Kentucky to win the UTC Lady Mocs Tournament title as she claimed the tournament as an individual.

She is also recognized for her community service in the Lexington area. Blackwelder has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, God’s Pantry, First Baptist Church of Versailles and UK Children’s Hospital.
