Hinz’s Clutch Hits, Humes’ Complete Game Shutout Claims Series

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Brooklin Hinz had two critical RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to score both Kentucky runs and sophomore Autumn Humes threw a complete game shutout as the Wildcats claimed the series over No. 8 LSU with a 2-0 win on Sunday.
 
A season-high crowd of 1,200+ came out to watch the Wildcats claim their second-straight win over the No. 8 Tigers and were witnesses to UK winning its second-straight series over a top-10 team dating back to 2017.
 
Kentucky will go for the series sweep over LSU on Monday night in the SEC Network National Game of the Week at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be called once again by Mark Neely (pxp) two-time All-American Amanda Scarbrough and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Michele Smith.
 
With Sunday’s win, UK has now won four in a row and sits at 19-6 overall on the season with a 2-3 record in Southeastern Conference play. LSU drops its second straight, and fourth of the season to fall to 23-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.
 
Key Stat
Seven. Sophomore pitcher Autumn Humes struck out seven Tigers at the plate on Sunday afternoon in the game as she cruised to her first-career SEC win in the circle. Humes went the distance allowing five hits, two walks and did not allow a single LSU batter to reach third base in the game.
 
Key Play
Brooklin Hinz’s single into left to break open the scoring was the key play in the game. Jenny Schaper led off the inning with a double and pinch runner Kelsee Henson came around to score on the Hinz single.
 
Key Player
Brooklin Hinz was the key player in the game, as both of her hits were RBI singles – and ended up being the difference in the game.
 
Run Recap
After Jenny Schaper led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right, Abbey Cheek laid down a perfect bunt to move pinch hitter Kelsee Henson to third with one out. After a strikeout, Hinz stepped up and hit an RBI single into left to score Henson and give UK the 1-0 lead. UK 1, LSU 0
 
In the bottom of the sixth. Abbey Cheek singled with one out and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Hinz then again with two outs roped a ball down the line in left to score Cheek from second and put the insurance run on the board.
 
Autumn Humes put the closing touches on the Tigers in the seventh inning by getting the 8-9-1 batters in the LSU order to groundout, strikeout and groundout to end the game. She retired seven of the last nine Tiger batters in the game. FINAL – #23 Kentucky 2, #8 LSU 0
