Kentucky Heads to San Diego for Campbell/Cartier Classic

by Chris Shoals

SAN DIEGO – After a 1-2 weekend in New Mexico against one of the best offensive teams in the country, the Kentucky softball team will look to get back on track this coming weekend, as it participates in the annual Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State University at the SDSU Softball Complex in the Golden State.

UK kicks off its tournament play on Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET against the host Aztecs before games with Cal State Fullerton and Illinois-Chicago on Friday. The Saturday slate concludes the weekend for UK with games against the North Dakota State Bison and a second game against Cal State Fullerton.

The Wildcats scored 25 runs against NM State, the second-most runs scored in program history through the opening three games of a season, dating back to the 2007 season. UK got great production from the top of its order, including Katie Reed and Bailey Vick. Reed hit .575 on the weekend with two multi-hit games and a pair of home runs. Vick’s batting average leads the team, as she also had a multi-hit game in two of the three played last weekend.

Kentucky went 4-1 the last time it played in the Campbell/Cartier Classic in 2016, with wins over SDSU, Texas Tech (2x) and South Dakota before suffering its only loss of the weekend to California.
