Mallory Peyton Clubs Fourth HR of Season in Series-Opening Loss

by Chris Shoals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Freshman Mallory Peyton hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning and junior shortstop Katie Reed went 4-for-4 at the plate, but it wasn’t enough offense as the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies took the series opener on Friday night from No. 19 Kentucky, 9-2.

Katie Reed was 4-for-4 at the plate on Friday with three singles and a double. The four hits for Reed in a single game are a new career best. She had recorded three hits in seven different games, but never four times. Reed is now hitting .452 on the season after her stellar game.

The Aggies got off to a fast start offensively, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run from Sarah Hudek to left center field. TAMU would then score a run in five of the next six innings.

Kentucky scored its only pair of runs in the game off of a two-run home run from freshman Mallory Peyton. Brooklin Hinz was on first after she reached on a fielder’s choice to score her 23rd run of the season.

Game two of the series is on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET from the Aggie Softball Complex in College Station. The game will be shown live on ESPN2, ESPN3 and the ESPN app with Tiffany Greene (pxp) and former All-American Amanda Scarbrough (color) on the call.

Key Stat

The biggest play of the game for the Wildcats was Mallory Peyton’s HR to left. It was hit so hard, it hit a campus bus on the fly on the road beyond the outfield wall. It was her fourth long ball of the season and scored Brooklin Hinz, as well.

Key Player
Ashley Ruiz was the key player in the game for UK, as she entered the game to pitch for the first time in her career. The sophomore did well, getting out of a big-time jam with a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
