GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kentucky freshman Sydney McLaughlin started her outdoor season by running the NCAA-leading women’s 200-meter time 22.39 seconds to kick off, literally and figuratively, the Florida Relays on Thursday.

Teammate Jasmine Camacho-Quinn was second, winning the second heat after McLaughlin won the first heat of the day, with the second fastest qualifying time in the NCAA this season (allowable for NCAA East Preliminary Championships qualifying purposes) 22.59w (+3.0).

McLaughlin’s time broke the UK freshman record, made her the No. 2 performer on the UK all-time list behind 2015 NCAA Champion’s Dezerea Bryant’s NCAA–winning 22.18 and moved her to No. 4 on the world junior all-time list, a solid start to the outdoor campaign.

The top 32 times/marks in every event recorded during the outdoor season qualify for East Prelims. Recording those times and marks early in the season are the name of the game at this point in the outdoor regular season. Sprint (100-200m) times are allowable as long as the wind is less than 4.0 meters/second, in contrast to record-recording purposes, which only allow winds slower than 2.0 m/s.

Two more Wildcats broke 23 seconds in the 200m on Thursday as Kayelle Clarke was fifth in 22.91w (+3.0), and Kianna Gray placed sixth in 22.96 (+1.5).

Avery Bussjager was runner-up in the late-night women’s 5k with a 13-second personal best time of 16:46.29.

Dwight St. Hillaire ran a time of 20.61w (+2.3) to place sixth, which was faster than Jose Acevedo’s freshman record of 20.79, but not wind legal.

Faith Ross ran the best 400m hurdles time of her young collegiate career, 58.86, to place fourth in the 400m hurdles. UK Class of 2017 Kiah Seymour was fourth in 58.25.

Logan Bryer placed third in the men’s open hammer throw with a mark of 203’00″/61.87m.

Elijah Marta placed fifth in the men’s javelin with a mark of 214’03″/65.30m.

The meet continues Friday at noon Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.

Eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing at the Florida Relays are ranked in the USTFCCCA preseason top 25. In all, 102 universities are entered in this year’s Florida Relays.

Jacob Thomson is the lone UK entry at the Raleigh Relays as he will run the 10k Friday at 9:25 p.m. A portion of the meet will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, but the published windo concludes at 8:30 p.m.
