Ryo Matsumura Named Co-SEC Player of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. –  After taking down the No. 3 and No. 25 player in the nation, junior Ryo Matsumura was named Co-Southeastern Conference Player of the Week. Matsumura shared the honor with Texas A&M’s Jordi Arconada.
 
Matsumura started the week with a nonconference win over No. 3 Mikael Torpegaard of No. 3 Ohio State on the top court, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4. The win was his second over an opponent ranked No. 3 in the nation this season.
 
Back in SEC play, Matsumura took down No. 23 Vanderbilt’s top player, No. 25 Cameron Klinger, 6-1, 6-1. Matsumura is now 9-1 in SEC competition this season.
 
Matsumura shot up to No. 9 in the nation after his two wins. He was ranked No. 26 last week and currently holds 35.45 ITA points. The Fukui, Japan native is 16-2 overall this season and has won 11 of his last 12 matches.  
 
Matsumura also earned a doubles win with Enzo Wallart over baker Newman and George Harwell last week, 7-5.
 
Kentucky will finish the regular season against Tennessee and Georgia this weekend. UK will take on the Vols on Friday, April 13 at 6 p.m. and Georgia on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
