No. 23 Kentucky Men’s Tennis Earns Three Ranked Singles Wins in 4-3 Loss to No. 6 Texas A&M

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Despite three ranked singles victories for UK, the Kentucky (13-7, 6-3 SEC) men’s tennis team fell to No. 6 Texas A&M (16-4, 8-0 SEC), 4-3, at the Boone Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Will Bushamuka, Enzo Wallart and Trey Yates all earned ranked wins over top-50 opponents during the match.
 
The Aggies started up 1-0 after winning the doubles point. No. 31 Cesar Bourgois and Gus Benson fell to No. 19 Jordi Arconad and Juan Carlos Aguilar, 6-3 and the duo of Ryo Matsumura and Enzo Wallart fell to No. 48 Patrick Kypson and Arthur Rinderknech, 6-2. Will Bushamuka and Austin Hussey were down 5-4 when play was called.
 
UK evened the match with Bushamuka’s highest ranked win of the season. Bushamuka breezed past No. 6 Arthur Rinderknech, 6-4, 6-0 to give Kentucky its first point of the match. Bushamuka is riding a six match winning streak, and is 3-4 against nationally ranked opponents. Last week, he earned a top-15 win against Mississippi State.
 
Texas A&M answered back when No. 37 Patrick Kypson beat No. 26 Matsumura, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to take a 2-1 advantage. Matsumura fell on the top court for the first time this season.
 
The Wildcats evened the match once again as Trey Yates beat No. 25 Valentin Vacherot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Yates’ victory puts him at 2-1 against ranked opponents this season, and the win was his highest of the year.
 
Kentucky briefly took the lead when Enzo Wallart took down No. 49 Jordi Arconada, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-5. Wallart is 12-4 this season and 8-3 on the No. 3 court. Texas A&M won on court five almost immediately after, with Kento Yamada dropping to Juan Carlos Aguilar, 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 3-3.
 
The Aggies won the match on the sixth court. Barnaby Smith beat Austin Hussey, 7-5, 7-5.
 
Kentucky will be back in action on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Ohio State at the Boone Tennis Center.
