Marta López Echevarría Fires Off Six Birdies in the NCAA Regional Second Round
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The clouds parted and the sun appeared for the second round of the NCAA Regional at Champion Trace at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on Tuesday, as Marta López Echevarría rolled in six birdies in front of Big Blue Nation.
The senior paired a 2-over front nine with a 2-under back nine to go even-par in the second round, two strokes improved from her first round Monday.
Her scorecard featured a little bit of everything Tuesday, starting with a par-bogey-par-double-birdie stretch through her first five holes. She then tapped in her second birdie on the par-4 No. 7 before going bogey-par on Nos. 8 and 9 to make the turn 2-over.
On the back nine, she suffered another bogey on the par-4 No. 10 but then she rattled off a trio of birdies over her next five holes, including the par-5 No. 11, the par-3 No. 14 and the par-5 No. 15. On No. 14, she hit the flagstick, nearly making an ace but earning a tap-in for the birdie. On No. 15, she again put herself in great position on the green, knocking in a 10-footer for the birdie.
She took another bogey on the par-3 No. 16 before ending her day with a par followed by a birdie on the par-4 No. 18.
López Echevarría concluded the second round with an even-par 72, two strokes better than her first round Monday. With her 144 (+2) tournament total, she improved four spots on the individual leaderboard for a share of 22nd place.
The field still has 18 holes remaining, with López Echevarría teeing off in the final round Wednesday at 9:50 a.m. ET off hole No. 1. The field can expect cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper-60s to lower-70s.
