Bjorgolfsson Named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – After recording both the game-winning goal and opening assist of No. 11 Kentucky’s Conference USA road debut last weekend, Eythor Bjorgolfsson was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Last Saturday, the then-10th-ranked Wildcats stormed into Boca Raton, Florida, and escaped with a 3-1 statement victory over the Owls of Florida Atlantic. Bjorgolfsson kickstarted the effort with a textbook pass across the 18-yard line to Clay Holstad on a Kentucky counter in the 16th minute, setting up Holstad’s first goal of the season and Bjorgolfsson’s team-high-tying fourth assist for a 1-0 Kentucky lead.
Following an equalizing penalty kick by Florida Atlantic in the 24th minute, the match remained a deadlock until deep into the second half. In the 71st minute, Bjorgolfsson gathered himself inside the goal area with his back to the net, striking a free kick delivered by Robert Screen out of the air with his left foot and sending it over his own shoulder into the goal.
With his team-leading third game winner of the season, Bjorgolfsson claimed the outright team lead in total points with 12 and tied the lead in goals with four.
Jansen Wilson added last Saturday’s final goal just three and a half minutes after Bjorgolfsson sealed the win, padding Kentucky’s lead off a long ball from the back by Bailey Rouse in the 75th minute.
Bjorgolfsson has started all 12 matches this season and was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2019.
Kentucky (9-2-1, 1-1 C-USA) is set to return home on Thursday for its first ranked matchup, hosting No. 8 Marshall (5-1-1, 2-0 C-USA) in a battle of the most recent C-USA champions at 7 p.m. ET, live on ESPN+.
