Wilby Breaks 200 Fly School Record, Kentucky Posts Historical Team Score
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Earning the highest team score in program history with 759 points, the University of Kentucky men’s swimming and diving team concluded the 2021 Southeastern Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in seventh place Friday inside the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
Mason Wilby saved his best performance for last, as the junior broke his second school record in less than 24 hours, this time doing so in the 200 butterfly. During preliminaries, he finished in second place on a personal record 1:42.69. In finals, he finished in fourth place on a school record 1:42.28. The prior school record was set by Kyle Higgins in 2016, when the former Cat touched the wall in 1:42.66.
Before tonight, Wilby had already reset the school record in the 200 freestyle during this meet, not once, but twice. Most recently, the Florida native recorded a time of 1:33.87 Thursday evening to become the first swimmer to break 1:34:00 in the event in program history.
Zane Rosely had a pair of career performances on the final night of the conference meet, too. In the 1,650 freestyle, the freshman touched the wall on a personal record 15:06.07 to finish in eighth place. The time is ranked sixth among the program’s all-time performances in the event. In the 200 butterfly, Rosely recorded a time of 1:46.12 to finish in 15th place, but before that, he touched the wall on a personal record 1:45.61 during preliminaries.
Earlier in the meet, Rosely won the 400 IM “B” final for ninth place on a personal record 3:44.84. It, too, earned a position on the all-time top-10 performances list in the event, ranking second in program history.
Daniel Orcutt topped the 200 butterfly “B” final Friday evening, earning a season-best 1:44.63. Kyle Barker finished in 15th place in the 200 backstroke on a personal record 1:44.08, which helped him improved to the fourth-fastest performer in the event in program history. Both seniors reached finals in each of their individual events during the last SEC Championships of their career.
Throughout the men’s meet, Kentucky swimmers recorded 36 personal records. The list of men’s and women’s swimmers and divers invited to the 2021 NCAA Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be released in early March.
