Collett, Humes Named SEC’s Brad Davis Community Service Award Winners
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky baseball’s T.J. Collett and softball’s Autumn Humes have been named the Southeastern Conference’s 2019-20 Brad Davis Community Service Award Winners, the league announced on Thursday.
The school award winners are nominees for the Male and Female Brad Davis Community Service Leaders of the Year which will be announced next week. The school winners will each receive a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship provided by the SEC. The male and female Community Service Leaders of the Year, to be announced next week, will each receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the SEC.
The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship is named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis. ?Davis succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006. ?He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner.
Collett, a senior first baseman from Terre Haute, Indiana, is a two-time member of the SEC Community Service Team who has been instrumental in UK baseball’s community outreach and service initiatives. He is heavily involved with the NEGU/Jessie Rees Foundation, whose mission is connecting with families of young cancer patients, bringing awareness to their stories, offering them a network of helpful resources and sending the entire family encouragement throughout their journey.
NEGU, which stands for Never Ever Give Up, has worked with Collett on bringing children and their families to UK home baseball games to experience pregame activities on the field and in the dugout, as well as be announced during the game. As part of his work with NEGU, Collett has spearheaded an effort where members of the UK baseball team delivery Joy Jars to young cancer patients. The jars are stuffed with toys, games, and other things to brighten patients’ days while fighting the disease.
Humes has recorded 299 total community service hours in her time as a Wildcat, highlighted by helping to organize a mission trip in the summer to Nicaragua with teammates and other athletes at the University of Kentucky. She was a dedicated member of the Kentucky FCA, where she has over 50 hours of community work based in that platform. Humes has also participated in Special Olympics and the Miracle League, tying into charities and organizations based around sports and specifically softball. She was active in the Breakfast with Santa event in Lexington, Faith for Athletes, Lexington Parks & Recreation Therapeutic Services, Lord’s Legacy, Shriner’s Hospital event and God’s Pantry, where she assisted in packing and delivering lunches to underprivileged kids in the Lexington area.
Humes was a member of the 2019 SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team and was the 2017 NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year at Harding University in Arkansas before transferring to Kentucky. She has appeared in 66 games as a pitcher for Kentucky in her career as a Wildcat, notching a 3.23 ERA with 29 wins in the circle in over 290 innings pitched. She also saw success at the plate, hitting .232 in her career, including a career-best season in her senior year with a .300 average, two grand slams, four home runs, 15 RBI and six runs scored.
She announced earlier this month that she would be using her extra year of eligibility in 2021, returning to Lexington for a fourth year of competition.
