Kentucky Track & Field Earns 4 SEC Weekly Honors
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s strong start to the 2019-20 indoor season continues as Langston Jackson, Alexis Holmes, Abby Steiner and Ellen Ekholm were honored by the Southeastern Conference for their performances on Friday and Saturday at the Rod McCravy Memorial.
Langston Jackson, SEC Men’s Co-Runner of the Week
Jackson takes the honor for the second time in three weeks after posting the No. 2 time in the NCAA in the 200-meter (20.72 seconds) and the No. 4 time in the NCAA in the 60m (6.61) last weekend. The freshman leads the SEC in both of these events.
Alexis Holmes, SEC Women’s Co-Runner of the Week
Holmes also receives the honor for the second time in three weeks after recording the fastest time in the NCAA in the 400m with a 52.27 last weekend. Additionally, Holmes anchored the 4x400m relay team of Megan Moss, Steiner and Dajour Miles which set the fastest time in the world currently with a 3:31.29.
Abby Steiner, SEC Women’s Co-Runner of the Week
Steiner opened in the 200m last Friday and registered the fastest 200m time in the NCAA with a 23.06. She also ran on the 4x400m relay time to contribute to the fastest time in the world currently which is 3:31.29.
Ellen Ekholm, SEC Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week
Ekholm receives the honor for the second week in a row after breaking her own school record in the high jump with a 6-1.25 (1.86m). That mark leads the NCAA. Ekholm has broken the school record in back-to-back weeks now.
In the last three weeks, the Wildcats have earned eight honors from the SEC. Jackson, Holmes and Ekholm have all been recognized twice while Steiner and Megan Moss (SEC Women’s Co-Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15) have been recognized once.
UK will take this weekend off before traveling to Blacksburg, Virginia for the Doc Hale Elite Meet on Feb. 7-8. The distance runners are scheduled to compete in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Feb. 8 at the Camel City Invite. In the latest rankings by the USTFCCCA, Kentucky’s women’s team was ranked No. 5 while the men’s team was ranked No. 10.
