NR/No. 13 Wildcats Come Up Just Short, Falling at No. 16/18 Ohio State
COLUMBUS, OHIO – Eleven Wildcats had a combined 14 gold performances, but it didn’t accumulate enough points as the NR/No. 13 Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost to No. 16/18 Ohio State on Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
“It was a hard fought contest on both sides,” said Lars Jorgensen. “Ohio State swam really well in its home pool this weekend. Our women’s team fought really hard down to the last relay, but they came up short. Freshman Caitlin Brooks had an outstanding meet and really helped lead our women’s team.
“On the men’s side, there were a lot of bright spots. Freshman Jakob Clark did a terrific job in his events. Senior Alex Taylor had an outstanding meet, and senior Peter Wetzlar performed at a very high level as usual. We’ve got a couple weeks of training before we compete again at the end of the month at Louisville.”
The Kentucky women’s team lost to Ohio State after the final event of the meet, trailing Ohio State in the end by just seven points, 163-156. The men’s team also lost to Ohio State, falling 175.5.-142.5.
Kentucky earned 14 first-place finishes in the 34-event meet. Seven were earned by the men’s team and seven were earned by the women’s team. That wasn’t the only 1-2 sweep the women’s team would claim at the dual meet, as a pair of undergraduates would take their honors in the women’s 100-yard backstroke event. Brooks, a two-time Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honoree for her performances in the 100-yard backstroke this season, earned gold in the event with a time of 52.91.
