Kentucky Women’s Soccer Falls to Central Michigan on Sunday Afternoon

by Tommy Scott

LEXINGTON, Ky — Kentucky (5-3-2) fell, 2-1 in overtime, to Central Michigan (3-0-2) on Sunday afternoon at The Bell. A controversial goal by Lauren DeBeau as time expired in the first overtime period won the game for the Chippewas.

The Wildcats earned an own goal in the 59th minute when Madi Rennie delivered a great ball into the box for Hannah Richardson who chipped it towards goal and past the keeper. The ball bounced off of the post and into an oncoming CMU defender who put it in to give UK the 1-0 lead.

Central Michigan responded seven minutes later when Kentucky failed to clear the ball out of its own box and conceded a goal to Cami Taylor to tie the game up at one. The Chippewas would go on to win as DeBeau put a corner kick into the goal with, what appeared to be, no time left in the first overtime period to give CMU the win.

Head Coach Ian Carry
“Unfortunately, in our sport, you get what you deserve,” Kentucky head coach Ian Carry said. “We had plenty of opportunities to end the game, but again, we are not clinical enough in front of goal. I think that we went away from who we are and away from our game plan and dropped down to a level that is unacceptable for a program like ours. The locker room was a place of disappointment after the game but conceding goals in the manner that we did today was criminal and puts us in a position where now, everything that we are building towards becomes tougher to achieve. I’m disappointed, but I know the quality and the talent that we’ve got within the roster and I know that these young women had a collective off-day and they will bounce back from this defeat. This is a very talented group that unfortunately, whether they’re young or not, will have to use this as a huge teachable moment as we move back into our conference play this coming week.”
