Kentucky Women’s Soccer Falls to Indiana on Sunday Afternoon

by Tommy Scott

LEXINGTON, Ky — Kentucky (5-1-2) fell, 1-0, to Indiana (4-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at The Bell. A goal in the 17th minute by Melanie Forbes was the difference in the Hoosiers defeating the Wildcats and handing UK its first loss of the season.

Indiana made life difficult for Kentucky throughout the entirety of the match. The Hoosiers maintained possession for the majority of the game and made things hard on the Wildcats backline, giving them no room for any mistakes.

The lone goal in the game came from a throw-in near Indiana’s penalty area. The Hoosiers caught UK’s defense at a bad time and made it pay when Avery Lockwood took a quick throw-in into the box and passed it across the face of goal for Forbes who then fired it home for an early lead.

From there, Kentucky showed a few signs of life but could not find the right combination to unlock Indiana’s strong defense.

The Wildcats will now focus on Auburn as they begin play in the Southeastern Conference.

Head Coach Ian Carry
“We had a disappointing first half because I thought that we gave Indiana too much time to play a style of possession-based soccer where we end up just chasing the ball,” Kentucky head coach Ian Carry said. “We sat too deep and didn’t inflict our game on them and that was something that we addressed at halftime. It was very disappointing to give up a goal that we switched off on, and when you do that, you’re going to get punished when you’re up against teams from a Power Five conference if you’re not looking at everything that is going on around you. I thought we came out in the second half with a little more anger and caused Indiana some problems. Still though, I feel that we didn’t question their backline enough. This game gave us a great opportunity going into conference play to face a team that will play the Penn State’s and Ohio State’s of the world and compete. So, being able to get a good game like this sets us up really well for Auburn on Thursday night. We’ve got a locker room now that, yes, they see good things from the second half, but they also understand and feel that they’ve let themselves down in the first 45 minutes. So, it’s time to regroup and get back onto the practice field on Tuesday and prepare for an exciting game on Thursday night against Auburn.”
