Kentucky Women’s Soccer Defeats Youngstown State on Sunday

by Tommy Scott

LEXINGTON, Ky.– Kentucky (2-0-2) defeated Youngstown State (1-3-0) by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at The Bell. Goals from Foster Ignoffo, Hannah Richardson and Jordyn Rhodes made the difference in the Wildcats’ second-straight win.

Ignoffo’s goal in the fifth minute set the tone for the game, with UK causing pressure and creating chances throughout the full 90 minutes. Kentucky made it a long day for Penguins’ goalie Kate McEachern and her defense as the Wildcats tallied up 13 shots-on-target and registered 11 corners.

Richardson out-dribbled a couple of defenders and slotted the ball home in the 26th minute to score her second goal in two games, while Rhodes’s goal in the 53rd minute was set up perfectly with a pass from Ignoffo into the center of the penalty area where Rhodes was to place it past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season.

Overall, UK was able to get minutes for the majority of the squad and win in convincing fashion for its second win of the season. There was, however, much more to be desired from the Kentucky attack as YSU’s McEachern came away with 10 saves on the afternoon.

Head Coach Ian Carry
“I’m happy with how energetic we were in this game,” Kentucky head coach Ian Carry said. “Which is always difficult, especially being on the road on a Thursday. I was really pleased with how we were able to empty our bench and get minutes in everybody’s legs. I think that’s absolutely key for us moving forward. The negative side of it, we had 13 shots on goal and x-amount of opportunities inside the box and only came away with three goals, so that’s disappointing. We challenge the team to be a little more ruthless in front of goal, so that’s obviously an area that we need to get back on the practice field and work on. Overall, I’m happy but we have a lot of things to work on. But, it’s another win for this very young team. We ended up with nine freshmen on the field at one time, so it’s really good to get the cohesiveness with that young group for us moving forward.”
