LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky (0-0-1) drew 3-3 with Bowling Green (0-0-1) to begin its 2019 campaign. A stellar performance from Jordyn Rhodes (11′, 84′) and a clutch penalty kick goal from Hikari Yamada (56′) gave the Cats all they needed to earn a draw.

The Wildcats started off strong with a goal in the 11th minute by Rhodes with an assist by Miranda Jimenez. The Cats were able to hold off the Falcons until the 37thminute when Nikki Cox scored the tying goal unassisted. She was followed by Katie Cox with an assist from Chelsea Washington 43rd minute.

In the 56th minute, the Wildcats came back into the fight thanks to a penalty kick by Yamada. Another penalty kick was scored by Bowling Green in the 83rd minute by Maureen Kennedy, but it was answered by the Cats in 84th minute when Gretchen Mills delivered a beautiful ball into the penalty area from a corner and Rhodes headed it into the back of the net.

With the score tied 3-3, the game continued into the first overtime that was concluded with no score. The match progressed into a second overtime period that also resulted in close calls, but no goals for either team. As a result, the first match of the season for the Cats ended in a draw at 3-3.

Head Coach Ian Carry:
“(Tonight) was a good learning experience for a very, very young side,” Carry said. “A lot of food for thought and I can’t wait to go back and look at the film. I thought we dominated the second half and played some really good soccer. (The girls) did everything we could have asked from them. Everything from the practice field transferred onto the game field and I couldn’t be prouder of the way we grinded.”
