UK Wraps Up Fall Slate at Steelwood Collegiate
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s golf team is set to conclude its fall slate with a two-day, 54-hole event at the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Alabama, beginning on Saturday. The 13-team field will play two rounds during the opening day of action and a final 18 on Sunday to determine a winner.
For the first time this season, weather is on track to play a factor. The forecast is calling for potential thunderstorms on Saturday morning and rain showers throughout the day. Sunday’s forecast is also predicting rain in the morning.
Kentucky’s starting five features senior Allen Hamilton, redshirt freshman Alex Goff, sophomore junior Garrett Wood, freshman Cooper Parks and senior Matt Liston. Junior Jacob Cook and redshirt freshman Jay Kirchdorfer will compete as individuals.
UK has garnered finishes of third (Bearcat Invitational), sixth (Island Resort Intercollegiate) and 11th (Crooked Stick Collegiate Invitational) thus far during its 2019-20 campaign. Hamilton leads the way with a 72.56 stroke average and the best individual finish thus far with a fourth-place showing at Bearcat. Goff is logging a 72.89 stroke average and has matched Hamilton with a pair of top-20 finishes.
The course, designed by former U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate, is rated by GolfDigest as one of the best courses in Alabama. The vistas are spectacular, especially the six holes bordering the lake. The course opened in 1997 and features 7,096 yards. The course rating is 74.0 and it has a slope rating of 144 on Bermuda grass.
Kentucky will appear in the event for the third time since 2016. UK placed fourth in 2017 and was the tournament’s runner up in 2016. Liston and Cook have both played the course during the 2017 appearance. Liston tied for 36th as a member of the starting five, while Cook hauled in a tie for 23rd playing as an individual.
South Alabama serves as the host of this week’s 13-team event, which also features Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Davidson, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Mississippi State, Navy, North Alabama, Rice, Richmond and Wofford.
The Cats will play alongside Indiana and South Alabama beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET off holes one, two, three and four. Live stats will be available via golfstat.com.
